A Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization and/or permanent birth control. During the procedure, the vasa deferentia (found within the testes) are severed, and then tied/sealed in a manner such to prevent sperm from entering into the seminal stream (ejaculate). At the Salisbury Day Surgery we offer sedation for all men undergoing a Vasectomy, which allows them to sleep through the procedure with no memory of it upon waking.
Patients will then spend a short period recovering within our clinic before discharge. Men are advised to avoid heavy activities for a week following the procedure, and can return to normal sexual activities in approximately one week. A Vasectomy is an excellent choice of birth control for men who have completed their families and who wish to avoid an unwanted pregnancy in their partners.
A Vasectomy is not considered to be complete until two sperm counts come back with zero sperm. Until this is achieved contraception must be used.
