Surgical terminations of pregnancy are legal, safe, brief procedures which are completed under general anaesthesia or sedation by using gentle dilation of the cervix and vacuum aspiration to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Surgical terminations of pregnancy are completed at the Salisbury Day Surgery when a pregnancy is up to 18 weeks in gestation.
Surgical abortion allow the doctor to determine whether the pregnancy has been entirely removed immediately following the procedure, as opposed to medical terminations of pregnancy which may still require you to undergo a surgical termination of pregnancy in the event that a complete abortion does not occur. This will result in you having to pay for both procedures which can be costly and can also contribute to an increase in emotional distress. As anaesthetic agents are administered during a surgical procedure, you will require a carer to take you home, you will not be able to drive, operate machinery or sign any legal documents for 24 hours following your procedure.
